All my work is dynamically influenced by the ancient tradition of tile making in Spain and the Mediterranean countries. All the Mediterranean countries Have a long and exquisite history of creating sacred spaces and everyday life spaces with tiles. Tiles are intimately connected to the architecture of our cities and buildings. They are a source of beauty, quality of life and a reminder of the sacred. Both public spaces and private spaces of homes are elegantly embellished with ever changing patrons, murals, images made in with tiles to remind us that beauty is an integral part of being alive and of nurturing our spiritual being. The drive, over the centuries, to create spaces of beauty, elegance and grace, seek to surround us with the constant reminder of living both as spirituals beings and as sentient beings.
Many of the tiles I make are designed as stand alone coasters, cheese platters, bread trays, etc. But equality is important to me to design murals and backsplashes for homes, large farm tables and adornments for wood and metal furniture. When I am not making geometrical tiles, I investigate other design forms from around the world and many occasions I paint portraits of people on tiles.
Working with clay and glazes is not an exact science and that is part of the beauty of the process of this line of work. Each piece is different, just as snowflakes are, but together they create organic forms.
